Friends of the Santa Clara River is a member of the Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition that was founded in 2012. The Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition is a spin-off of the Southern California Steelhead Recovery Coalition of the 90’s and early 2000’s. The Coalition’s mission is to protect and restore wild Southern California steelhead and its habitat in the Santa Clara River watershed.
Guided by a five-year consensus based Strategic Plan and Implementation Plan, the Coalition has prioritized steelhead recovery actions for funding and implementation.
With funding from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fisheries Restoration Grant Program, and assistance from California Trout and Northwest Hydraulic Consultants, Friends completed a feasibility study and 65% engineering design to remove an Arizona low flow crossing on Sisar Creek in September 2017.

The current complete fish passage barrier will be replaced with a 90 foot free span bridge and restore passage to rearing and spawning habitat in Sisar Creek, a tributary known to be one of the most productive steelhead creeks in all of the Santa Clara River watershed.
Friends submitted a follow up grant proposal to CDFW FRGP in March 2018 and Coastal Conservancy Prop 1 in June 2018 to take design to 100%, with the hopes of bridge replacement slated for 2020/2021.
