FSCR is Almost a Property Owner!!!
Escrow Nearing Close on 230 Acres of Valley View Ranch

Bringing to a close a lengthy purchase process involving a complex lot line adjustment, Friends of the Santa Clara River is nearing ownership of 230 acres of river floodplain property known as Parcel 1 of the Valley View Ranch. The property, which includes approximately a mile of river frontage, is being purchased by the State Coastal Conservancy and donated to FSCR as part of the Conservancy's program of restoring coastal river floodplain and terrace lands to their natural state. The purchase is the first to occur under the Santa Clara River Enhancement and Management Plan.

One of the Conservancy's responsibilities as a leader in the new and complicated era of watershed planning is to show that on-the-ground projects can accomplish multiple objectives. The Valley View Ranch property contains some of the highest potential for river terrace habitat restoration along this reach of the river. Acquisition of this property will allow FSCR, in partnership with the Conservancy, to preserve this highly valuable and rare habitat type. This is extremely important in Southern California, which has lost all but 3-5% of its pre-settlement riparian woodlands.

Under a Grant Agreement entered into with the Coastal Conservancy, FSCR will manage and maintain the property. Our first responsibility will be to develop a management plan for the property including restoration. A preliminary restoration plan, which estimates the cost of native plant revegetation at $65,000, has already been developed under Conservancy auspices by the Romberg-Tiburon Center of San Francisco State University. Final plans and engineering will be based on the preliminary plan. Actual restoration will begin after the Conservancy has approved all plans.
